VIOLENCE IS LIKE A VIRUS - IT SPREADS

VIOLENCE IS LIKE A VIRUS - IT SPREADS

Goal #1 - Cut America's Murder Rate in Half

THE WORLD IS ON FIRE

OUR GOVERNMENT IS BROKEN

OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE IS IN GRAVE DANGER

THIS IS NOT A DRILL

your country needs your input to survive

(from New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's 2014 Aspen Institute presentation)

From 1980 to 2012, 626,000 people were murdered in our nation.  That's more Americans lost in the last few decades than were killed in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, the War in Iraq, and the War in Afghanistan - COMBINED.

Murder doesn't just happen.  The scourge grows out of poverty and hopelessness.

For many the deck is stacked against them from day one - broken families, struggling neighborhoods, poor schools, inadequate health care, no jobs.

The pressure and dysfunction takes a toll.  Frustration turns to cynicism, misery turns to despair.

Hope fades, hate grows, happy eyes turn sad, smiles turn sour, bitterness sprouts, and in the end tragedy triumphs - blood on the streets.  And every murder leaves a wake of destruction - a long line of victims - the collateral damage of gunshots in the dark.

An innocent child loses a father; a mother's heart is broken, a family is left alone.

Morally economically, and for the good of this nation's strength and security, we must do more.

America is drunk on violence and although today it may be another family in morning, like a virus, the violence spreads.

To be strong abroad, we must be strong at home as well.  We need to treat fighting murder and violent crime as a national priority.

It is our people getting slaughtered and if we are truly one nation, indivisible, with one shared destiny, something needs to be done.  Now is the time to take on this tough challenge.

Join together stating clearly as a moral imperative.  This is not right.  This is not who we are as Americans.  The killing must stop.

Invest in the solutions to this problem, get involved, spend your time, treasure and talent on this most difficult issue.

Through this work, we can inspire our nation and the world and prove that out of tragedy can come triumph.  After all, this is what we do as Americans.  We tackle big challenges, and this one is as tough as we have seen in a while.

"Something is not right in our Country".  Let's not blame others or ignore the issue.  Let's come together to solve this problem - to stop this virus from spreading - come together to grow stronger - strong and skilled enough to tackle the many other critical  issues facing our country.
